Today we caught the mid-morning train to Verona, arriving around 2pm then walked the 800-odd metres to our hotel near the station. After checking in to our rooms, we headed out to explore Verona. First stop, the 20 minute walk to lunch at Piazza Bra. We chose Bistrot Mamma Mia, and enjoyed a wonderful Italian Pizza. It was so good to eat Italian food after two weeks of German food.
We then started walking through the old town toward Piazza Erbe, and, of course, picked up our first Italian Gelato along the way.
The streets were full of people and Rania and Chrissa did some shopping before we cam up to Juliet’s house and the famous balcony.
Chrissa picked up some aprons as gifts, then we headed to Piazza Erbe. last time we were here it was raining and it was full of market stalls. Today it was hot, and the piazza was beautiful. From there we walked through to Piazza dei Signori then onto the famous Scaliger tombs.
As we walked towards the river, the crowds dwindled out and we were able to enjoy the ambiance. Verona really is beautiful. Walking along the river we discovered a little bar, Terrazza Bar al Ponte, so we stopped for a drink. We then walked over to the old bridge, Ponte Petra with a view of Castel San Pietro.
We walked past the Duomo then headed back to Piazza Bra where we caught a taxi to the hotel to get ready for dinner. We cleaned up and then headed back to Piaza Bra and Restaurant Ippopotamo for a beautiful Italian dinner. A perfect end to a wonderful first day in Italy.
