Today was a long day, as we set off early for the short, one hour train trip to Venice. We arrived at about 9am and immediately set off to walk towards St. Mark’s Square. The walk took about an hour and immersed us in the beauty of Venice.
St. Mark’s, as usual, was packed full of tourists and pigeons.
We wanted to go to Burano, so we headed to the nearby ferry terminal (past the bridge of sighs), and boarded the next ferry. It took about an hour to get to Burano, but it was worth the effort. Burano is beautiful.
From there we boarded the ferry back to Venice an walked to the Rialto bridge and across it to a gondolier for our obligatory gondola ride.
When we finished, we had a drink at the nearby Al Pesador Osteria where we could watch the ferries and gondolas go by. Eventually we caught a ferry to the Accademia and walked to Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, which is opposite St. Mark’s. We enjoyed the fabulous view.
By now it was getting late, so we caught the ferry back to Rialto and went to a restaurant we saw and liked earlier, called Riva Rialto. It was right on the water near the Rialto Bridge. We enjoyed some pizza and a love bottle of wine.
It was a fabulous end to a fabulous day. When we finished we caught a ferry back to St Lucia station, then caught the train for the short trip back to Verona. We didn’t get home till after 9pm.
