Today we had a long, four hour journey to Innsbruck, so we decided to break it up and stop for a few hours in Salzburg. We left our luggage at the station lockers, and started walking to Mirabell Palace. Salzburg is always beautiful, but today was a Saturday so it was really busy with people everywhere.
We started at the Mirabell, then wandered through the gnome garden before heading across the river to the old town.
We walked along Getreidegasse before picking a place to have lunch. We found an outdoor seating area that was showing the France vs Australia World Cup game, so we sat down for lunch at La Stella, next to some young French men to enjoy the food and the game.
When we finished, we walked along to the end of town to Mozartplatz, just enjoying the atmosphere. There was a fun run on that day, so there were people everywhere cheering on the runners.
We were now ready to head to Innsbruck. We walked back to the station, picked up our luggage and caught the next train. We arrived in Innsbruck before 4pm, checked into our hotel next door, then set off to explore the town.
Innsbruck is beautiful. The Tyrolean mountains are everywhere around you. The old town is gorgeous. We walked the length of the old town, then caught the train up to Nordkette for a panoramic view.
Exhausted, we went and had drinks at Cafe 360, a roof top bar with spectacular views.
After drinks we went for dinner at one of the oldest restaurants in town, Ottoburg, in a building that dates from the late 1400s. Dinner was a delicious entrecote.
As we ate, we saw many football fans heading to a fanzone to watch the next World Cup match, so we followed them after dinner. It was a fantastic site. The perfect end to a perfect day in Austria.
