Today we left at about 9am and caught the one and a half hour trip across the Austrian border to Salzburg. The girls were keen to explore some of the scenes from Sound of Music, so we started by walking to Schloss Mirabell. The gardens were immaculate and we took some amazing photos.
We then headed across the river to the Altstadt (the old town). What a wonderful town! We walked along Getreidegasse and then Judengasse, just exploring the shops and enjoying the buzz, before reaching Mozartplatz, the museums and the Dom.
We then walked over to the cemetery, made famous in the Sound of Music. It was beautifully decorated.
We found the funicular to go up to Festung Hohensalzburg, the old fortress overlooking the city. What an amazing structure.
The view was so nice that we decided to have lunch on the terrace at Festungsrestaurant. The meal was fine and the drink was very welcome on such a hot day. When we had seen enough, we headed back down and through the old town again. We ended back on the side of the Mirabel where we found more locations from the movie.
It was still a little early to go back to Munich, and given that we had not done much shopping on this trip, we decided to go to Europark, a shopping centre in Salzburg that had one European awards. We caught a cab there, but while it was beautifully designed, there were not many options for shops, so the girls left disappointed. We caught the short train trip back to the Hauptbahnhof, then caught the express back to Munich. From the station we headed back to Karlsplatz looking for a nice place to have dinner, and decided upon Zum Augustiner, where we walked down into a basement kellar. It was an enjoyable dinner after a very enjoyable day.
