Alsace, Colmar, Eguisheim, Riquewihr, Strasbourg, France

Posted on June 22, 2018December 7, 2019

We were looking forward to today after doing a similar trip last year – a day trip to the Alsace wine region. We caught an early train for the one hour trip from Bern to Basel, then walked around the corner to catch the Alsace Wine Train to Colmar.

Colmar is gorgeous. The station area is fairly quiet, but walking to La Petit Venise, the crowds started to pick up the closer we got to our destination. What can you say about this area – it is simply gorgeous.

We walked for ages, just exploring the old town. It is so beautiful. And, of course, we had to have a french nutella crepe.

Satisfied, we walked back to the train station and caught a taxi to Eguisheim, one of the beautiful medieval towns nestled in the Alsace vineyards. The town is designed as a series of concentric circles, and we just enjoyed walking around and around.

It was now early afternoon, so we organised a taxi to take us to our favourite town in this area, Riquewihr. Words cannot describe how beautiful this place is. We walked all the way to the clock tower, then stopped at the nearby Restaurant le Médiéval à Riquewihr for a lunch of entrecote and Alsace wine. Chrissa, of course, visited her favourite Christmas shop right next door.

After lunch we spent another hour just wandering the streets and enjoying the atmosphere before hailing a taxi back to Colmar Gare. We then caught the train to Strasbourg. It was getting on to 5 pm and the weather was not looking too good, so we hurried along to explore Petit France, the picturesque quarter of Strasbourg.

Strasbourg is pretty, but it is a big city and there were people everywhere. We walked into the old town, visited Galleries Lafayette, and walked past Kleber Square, the centre of town, but we were getting tired so we headed back to the station for the long trip home. Unfortunately we were stuck at the station for over an hour while they cleared the lines, so we did not get back to Bern until after 9pm. It was an exhausting, but very enjoyable day.
